As a University of Social Purpose, public and community engagement with research is embedded in all that we do.
It allows us to tune into society by listening, learning and connecting with new audiences, to ensure research is relevant and informed by those who benefit from it.
The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement defines public engagement as "The myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of higher education and research can be shared with the public. Engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of mutual benefit."
Our commitment to engagement
Royal Holloway is very proud to have signed the NCCPE’s Manifesto for Public Engagement. The Manifesto reinforces the need for public engagement, and its value to universities and for society.

- Showcasing our engagement
Many of our academics engage new audiences with their cutting-edge research through local, national and international events and festivals. Highlights include our own annual Science Festival, now proudly in its 25th successful year, and PLAY!, a week-long celebration of the most innovative music, film, and theatre at Royal Holloway. In addition, our researchers regularly lead sessions at the ESRC Festival of Social Science.
How we support public engagement with research at Royal Holloway
Our academic Directors of External Engagement support researchers to inform, inspire, consult and collaborate with new audiences through university and researcher led initiatives.
Our Research and Innovation team identifies new funding calls and opportunities, and provides guidance and support at pre-application and during the project.
Our Public Engagement Manager leads our place-based strategic initiatives, ensuring our research connects meaningfully with local communities and stakeholders.
