Professor Keith Martin published his expert insight in response to some reported improvements in algorithms threatening modern cryptography.

In his latest article in the academic journal, The Conversation, Professor Keith Martin from the Information Security Group (ISG) at Royal Holloway debates whether quantum computers could crack cryptographic codes and cause a global security disaster. 

Cryptography underpins the security of almost everything in cyberspace, from wifi to banking to digital currencies such as bitcoin. By weakening cryptography, quantum computing has the potential to present a serious threat to our everyday cybersecurity.  

So is a quantum-cryptography apocalypse imminent and should we panic?
