The German Studies Association has awarded this year's David Barclay Book Prize to the Head of our History section, Dr Robert Priest.
The prize, which was announced at the Association's annual conference in the United States this September, recognises Dr Priest's book Oberammergau: The Passion Play and Its Audiences from the Enlightenment to the Nazis, published by Oxford University Press.
Based on years of research in international and local archives, Dr Priest’s book tells the story of how a small Alpine community’s religious performance evolved over the centuries into a crucible of cultural tourism, intellectual fascination, and political conflict.
The Barclay Prize is a major international honour for books in modern German history, awarded annually to the best monograph in English or German on most aspects of the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Germany and Central Europe.
Many congratulations to Dr Priest on this prestigious award!
