Pulsars: Nature’s best clocks

Professor Ben Stappers
University of Manchester

Discovered in 1967, pulsars are ultra-compact stars, Sun-sized masses packed into a radius of 10 km, spinning up to 700 times/sec and emitting radio beams, making them nature’s most precise clocks. Professor Stappers will explain how they test Einstein’s gravity, reveal gravitational waves from supermassive black holes, share results from South Africa’s MeerKAT and preview the Square Kilometre Array.

Admission is free but booking is essential.
