In December 2025, we welcomed Grundon, our primary waste management contractor, to our Egham Campus to help raise awareness of recycling and waste reduction.
Grundon representatives Faye and Harry spoke to students and colleagues about how our waste and recyclables are processed, sharing practical tips on how to sort items correctly. To help bring the message to life, they also ran a competition and a lively game of bin-pong.
Our targets for reducing waste
As part of our RH2030s environmental sustainability strategic enabler, we are committed to reducing the amount of waste we produce across our campuses and improving how effectively we recycle. We already send zero waste to landfill and our Environmental Policy commits us to applying the waste management hierarchy across our operations, teaching and research.
Over the next two years, we’ll be stepping up our efforts. This includes targeting waste streams that are harder to recycle and strengthening our campus circular economy - such as reducing the volume of household items purchased and discarded in our halls of residence.
By summer 2026, we’ve set the ambitious target to:
- Reduce the total amount of waste we produce each year by a minimum of 5% (from 728.40 tonnes to 692.03 tonnes).
- Reduce the amount of non-industrial waste we produce each year per person by a minimum of 5% (from 41.21 kg to a maximum of 39.15 kg).
- Increase our overall recycling rate by 5% (from 44% to a minimum of 49%).
These goals form an important part of our journey toward becoming a more sustainable and responsible community.
